Description

The most decadent, authentic French Hot Chocolate you’ll ever taste — thick, rich, and irresistibly creamy. Inspired by the famous Paris cafés, this recipe captures the essence of true chocolate indulgence in every sip.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups (360 ml) whole milk

½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream

2 teaspoons powdered sugar (or to taste)

½ teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)

8 ounces (225 g) bittersweet dark chocolate (at least 70%), finely chopped*

Whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings, for serving

Instructions

  1. Warm the base:
In a medium saucepan, combine milk, cream, powdered sugar, and espresso powder (if using).
Heat gently over medium heat until small bubbles appear around the edges — do not boil.

  2. Add the chocolate:
Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the chopped chocolate and mix until melted and smooth.
If needed, return to very low heat and whisk until the texture becomes luxuriously thick and glossy.

  3. Serve immediately:
Pour into mugs, top generously with whipped cream, and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
Sip slowly, close your eyes, and imagine you’re at a café in Paris.

Notes

  • Best chocolate: Choose quality bars of dark or bittersweet chocolate (70%–75% cocoa).
Avoid chocolate chips—they contain stabilizers that prevent smooth melting.
  • Dairy-free option: Substitute whole milk and cream with full-fat coconut milk for a creamy vegan version.
  • Sweetness level: French-style hot chocolate is naturally bittersweet. Add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter taste.
  • Storage: Cool leftovers completely, then store in an airtight glass jar (like a mason jar) for up to 3 days.
Reheat slowly on the stove or in the microwave until warm and silky again.
  • Serving tip: Serve with buttery croissants, biscotti, or a simple slice of brioche for a café-style experience.
