Ingredients
6 slices bread (brown, white, potato, or multigrain)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
7–8 ounces sharp or aged cheddar cheese, shredded
½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet if desired.
-
Arrange the bread slices on the baking sheet. Lightly butter one side of each slice, then turn them over so the buttered side is facing down.
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined.
-
Stir in the shredded cheese and black pepper until evenly mixed.
-
Spoon the cheese mixture evenly over each slice of bread and spread gently into an even layer.
-
Bake for 8–12 minutes, until the bread edges are golden and the cheese topping is puffed and just set in the center.
-
Remove from the oven, sprinkle with fresh chives, and serve immediately.
Notes
- If aged cheddar is unavailable, use extra-sharp cheddar or another strongly flavored cheese that melts well.
- For added variety, cooked bacon or ham can be placed on the bread before adding the cheese mixture.
- These toasties are best eaten fresh and do not store or reheat well.
